Sub Day Success!
My AP Sem kids slayed the 8 lenses without me even present
On the sixth day of school, I wanted to introduce the lenses but I had a little doctor's appointment to get to. As I spent the first week doing team building and get-to-know-you activities, this appointment meant that I was set to miss the first real day of content in the course.
Fortunately, I adapted what I normally do and it went VERY well. Apparently, giving your high schoolers arts and crafts to do with a sub is a smart way to keep them actually engaged. (My Creative Writing students had just finished writing their own unique maxim and I left them the instructions to write it out on construction paper and make it "wall-worthy." All I had to do was leave markers and paper out on a table and the sub reported that the day went great!)
I had some videos of me walking in to the room the next day and gawking at the awesomeness of their posters, but my phone ate them (the videos, not the posters) so you'll have to just take my word for it: I was impressed! I followed it up by introducing the concept of "perspectives" and having them brainstorm potential perspectives for each lens and write them on post-it notes as they gallery-walked the posters and took notes on each lens.

And the final product once I choose the best posters for each lens and let an artsy kid add a title:
